Leeway in policy to punish Boston police

Commissioner rejects talk of an unfair process

When a Boston police officer called an African-American professor a “banana-eating jungle monkey” in an e-mail to the Globe, he was fired. But when a detective told two Hispanic men “you guys didn’t make it over the border,” he was quietly given a reprimand.

When an officer looked up an arrest record as a favor to a friend, he was suspended for 30 days. But when a patrolman asked a fellow officer to release his goddaughter and her friend from custody, he was suspended for one day.

We have a guy who was tried as an accessory to murder in line to rejoin the police force???  Why hasn't the City appealed that arbitration ruling as high as possible?  They spent an awful lot of money contesting acceptance of a qualified woman who they didn't like because her hair was described as "messy" but an accessory to murder they back off?

Forget everything else. Will someone please just give all cops, state troopers included, remedial training on the art of simple courtesy and decency towards the citizenry they are paid to serve? These guys (and girls) with guns, badges, uniforms, law enforcement toys, post-steroidal gazes, fat *sses, and attitude too frequently treat the ordinary citizen as if he were a member of al-Qaeda. Compared to them, arrogant major league umpires seem like the staff of Downton Abbey.

LeoTheLion4...Unfortunately, I have to agree.  I have been in this business for many years and it sickens me to see officers treat the average person in an impatient, disrespectful manner.  This seems more apparent andwidespread in the larger cities and particulalry among troopers, whom do not seem to understand the concept of Community Policing.  The police are quasi-military but their job is to wok WITH the public.

I know we deal with complete a**holes on a regular basis and are treated with much disrespect.  But when I ask you for directions don't make it sound like I am bothering you with a stupid question.

Those officers who know how to treat people with respect and courtesy will get it in return and cultivate tons of good information to help catch the bad guys and make the job easier

As for the discipline issue, first of all I have a lot of respect for the Commissioner as he has worked his way through the ranks and I believe he has integrity.  If you make things too stringent, by the book, with no discretion, people are still going to be unhappy.  Every case is different no matter how some thing they are the same.

Banana eating monkey?? Bye Bye.. Nobody should beatch about that firing!
