Maine panel to probe abuse of tribal children by welfare agents

The commission that will investigate past abuses by child welfare agents who systematically removed tribal children from their households has been seated. The truth and reconciliation panel aims to explore tribal experiences with the child welfare system. Commissioners told WZON-AM Tuesday that their task is to uncover the truth, promote healing, and make recommendations about best child welfare practices. Tribal officials said the removal of children from their households broke up families and exposed some children to abuse in the foster-care system. The panel consists of the secretary of state, a university professor, a former state Board of Education chairwoman, and two Native Americans with ties to tribes in South Dakota and Massachusetts.
