The American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts is suing the town of Shirley on behalf of a local official who is banned from public property there for comments he made at a Finance Committee meeting in 2011. Robert Schuler, a Finance Committee member, said during a May 2011 meeting that he would “pull my gun out and start shooting or something” if selectmen did not address town budget problems, the ACLU said in a civil complaint filed Thursday in federal court in Boston. Schuler’s statement was clearly meant as hyperbole, and the ban violates his civil rights, the complaint contends. Four local officials are also named as defendants.
