Parents of child injured in $63m Motrin case speak out

PLYMOUTH — At 16, Samantha Reckis has the long auburn hair she had as a child, the same laugh, the same spirit. But she is not the same person, nor are her parents, since she suffered devastating injuries after taking Children’s Motrin for a fever at age 7.

A Plymouth County jury awarded Samantha and her parents a record $63 million in damages this week against drug maker Johnson & Johnson for failing to adequately warn patients about the painkiller’s potential side effects.

Good luck to the family.  An inspirational story.  Hoping for the best.

Thanks, Bella, for helping the family tell us about Samantha's challenges for the rest of her life and her charm. God bless her, and God bless her parents.

i too hope for the best for this unfortunate girl. i must say, however, that her experience underscores the inherent danger in all medications the public uses, either prescribed or over the counter. Any preparation can cause a toxic response; it goes without saying that this is so. We utilize medications because in the vast majority of situations the reward outways the risk. But to be surprised, as by your account the jury appeared to be, says something about the jury--and the public as a whole--not the drug or the drug complany. If the public seeks 100% safety from side effects their only recourse is to not take medications

I wish Samantha and her parents nothing but the best.  She seems like an extraordinary young woman.  That said, it seems to me that the warning on the Motrin package was more than adequate and the amount of the award is absurd.

sad story. absurd amount. no guarantees in life though...
