Cold to give way to spring-like temperatures

Today’s cold weather will be short-lived, with temperatures expected to reach the mid-40s Tuesday ahead of a rainstorm that threatens commutes on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Despite today’s clear, sunny skies, gusty winds will rake the state making temperatures in the upper 30s feel more like the upper teens, meteorologist Bill Simpson said.

Winds could gust to 36 miles an hour today, though they will gradually diminish overnight, he said.

Things will warm up Tuesday with temperatures reaching up to 46 degrees as rain arrives in the mid-afternoon, east of Interstate 495, Simpson said.

Rain is expected to begin around 4 p.m. Tuesday and wrap up after Wednesday morning’s commute. Just over a quarter of an inch is expected to fall in Boston.

This weekend, a storm dumped more snow on Eastern Massachusetts, with 5.1 inches falling at Logan Airport and 6 inches in Duxbury, along with high winds gusting over 40 miles-per-hour. The Cape saw the most action thanks to wind gusts over 60 miles an hour and up to 6.5 inches of snow, helping to knock out power for hundreds on Sunday.

This morning, NStar and National Grid’s outage maps showed just a handful of customers still without power on the Cape and South Shore, including NStar reporting 14 people without power in Dennis just after 10 a.m. and one to three customers without power in neighboring Barnstable, Sandwich, Falmouth, and Yarmouth.

The rest of the week should be mostly marked by clear skies and a return to normal temperatures, around 39 degrees, in the Boston area, Simpson said.

The quiet weather pattern will not stay long, as another weather system looms on the horizon for late Friday and early Saturday, though forecasters said it is too early to call the system a snowstorm.
