O’Malley mentioned as contender for pope

In Italy, media speculate he could be in the mix

Has the next pope spent the last few years working in . . . Braintree?

As cardinals around the world prepare to elect Pope Benedict XVI’s successor next month, speculation is raging about potential candidates — and a number of Italian Vatican-watchers have begun to mention Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley.

The Curia would love him. Administration is not his strongest talent & they plan to continue to call the shots.

So the fixer brought into Boston to "fix" Bernard Law's mess (and earlier Fall River and Palm Beach) may replace the Vatican fixer also known as "God's Rotweiler," Benedict. Might there be a pattern here?

"A good feel for gossip."  That sounds sexy, but not the basis for serious discussion.  Cardinal O'Malley's moving to Rome would save the Boston archdiocese a million dollars or more.  We can finally fire the grossly overpaid, six-figure cabinet secretaries he surrounds himself with.  Perhaps he could entice Mr. Romney to join his new incorporated curia.

Would Cardinal Harry Potter then be Pope Harry Potter.. No changes since Law fled to Rome.. Nice PR guy but just another Ratzinger flunkie as far as performance goes.

Divest the Roman Church of ALL it's wealth and Corporate holdings...and feed the world.

The Cardinal who has restored credibilty to the Catholic Church is Jose Gomez, the Cardinal out in L.A. Gomez has publicly criticized his predecessor, Cardinal Roger Mahony, for Mahony's terrible conduct in transferring around known pedophile priests, who went on to molest and mar even more young Catholic boys. O'Malley has not the gumption to speak publicly and truthfully about Bernard Law's responsibilty in transferring instead of punishing pedophile priests within the Archdiocese of Boston. God Bless Cardinal Gomez! May Jose be our next Pope!

for "The Church", authority trumps credibility, has since Constantine's "conversion".

O'Malley is a troll, by comparison to Gomez.

This is silly. No one affiliated with the Boston area Catholic church could ever assume a leadership position. The mess is far from fixed so the the back patting of the Cardinal is premature.

Cardinal O'Malley is a man of great intellect and humility which are both necessary pillars of the life he has be called to as a Franciscan monk. I have had the opportunity to hear Cardinal O'Malley speak on a few occassions. When speaking, Cardinal O'Malley has the ability to bring into clear focus the simple, but profound, concepts and insights  Jesus brought into this world 2000 year ago; notwithstanding what human institutions or humans have or have not done with that message. The Universal Church would be well served by the leadership of a humble Franciscan monk such as Cardinal O'Malley is.
