Westford selectmen reject assault weapons ban

The Westford Board of Selectmen rejected a measure on Wednesday night to ban assault weapons in town. Selectmen voted 5 to 0 to remove the proposed ban from a Town Meeting warrant that is up for a vote next month, said Selectman Robert Jefferies, the vice chairman of the board who first suggested that the town craft a ban. He said selectmen removed the proposal after it attracted national attention, but the town still intends to “have a conversation and reach consensus” on weapons and how to secure them.

One of the most ignorant and ridiculous bans I've ever heard of.

The  abuse of power by the Board of Selectmenbut the end of democracy in Westford are marked by the withdrawal of an article that had been closed from an annual town meeting warrant that had beenclosed for several weeks.
The proper action would have been for the warrant to be opened and article 30 removed from the warrant. Opening the warrant posed a little problem in that several petition articles had been submitted. Opening the warrant would have placed 2 of the petition articles dealing with gun control on the warrant. Since Jefferies and Peraner-Sweet  are both running for re-election on the 30 April town elections, the prolonging the discussion on limiting gun owner rights by local bylaw action would have been prolonged until at least the 23 March Annual Town Meeting. Jefferies and Peraner-Sweet, with the assistance of BoS Chairman Kelly Ross, hope that 68 days will be sufficient time to calm the ardor of the defenders of the 2nd Amendment.
Of course, if some enterprising editor or reporter were to contact the Attorney General there could be criminal indictments forthcoming.
