Changes are in the air for The Boston Globe

Many moons ago, when my hair was still black and Ronald Reagan was still president, Rupert Murdoch saved the Boston Herald by buying it.

A group of young turks was hired to reverse the tabloid’s sinking fortunes, and soon the newsroom was swimming in talent and enthusiasm. It launched the Boston careers of some of the more enduring figures in the local newspaper game: Frank Phillips, Brian Mooney, Shelley Murphy, Andy Gully, Matt Carroll, Joe Sciacca, Gayle Fee.

Great column, Kevin.

Kevin: nice to see you're consistent to the end........

Kevin:  maybe what's "done you in" is the same old, unwavering message; not the messenger.

Lets hope the globe is changing.  We need something other than Pravda.

(I like howie, but can't stomach the rest of the herald)

Oh, I thought you were referring to the globe............

Well said.  Looking forward to many years of reading the on-line and paper versions of The Boston Globe.   There's really nothing like sitting on your couch on Sunday with the paper version or reading it atmy desk at lunch.  Old school all the way!

If Murdoch buys the paper you can cancel my subscription.

Ditto

Yup, my sentiments exactly.

Mr. Cullen suggests that maybe even Sir Rupert Murdoch will "throw his hat in the ring" to buy the Globe. This scenario would open up the possibility of Herald Publisher Pat Purcell, a good friend of Murdoch's, becoming Publisher of both the Herald and the Globe!

This is wonderful news.  I guess that there are not enough moonbats in Brookline, Newton, and Cambridge buying this rag.  Hope that Joan Venocchi and all of the other moonbat reporters are the first to go.  Maybe Senator "Pochahontas" Warren can get some stimulus money from Obama to save the paper.  After all the Globe got her elected.

Ugly, ugly, ugly.

Yawn.  Your tinfoil hat a little tight today?

no cindy. the Globe didn't get her elected. the PEOPLE got her elected.

your obvious lack of intelligence is only over-shadowed by your desire to blame everybody for Brown's loss except Brown himself and his shoddy policy platform.

oh and using terms like "moonbat" and "Pochahontas" only showcases your 5th grade education. we are truly sorry you have been left behind but don't worry, that is why we have a strong social safety net in this state. to help people like you better yourselves for the good of society.

Replies

Oh TiredWingNut, let's see, you do not like the term "moonbat" so you insult that person by stating they have a 5th grade education?

Then you do the classic "Moonbat" dance and start with the "WE" routine.  Do any of you ever stand on your own two feet?  I keep thinking Moonbats are more like Borg, if someone pulled the plug, they would all just go limp.

Stong social safety net.  Ahh, that is Moonbat talk for the Nanny State?  Cindy did not ask you to help her "better" herself.  Of course, the Moonbat Collective doesn't care whether someone wants to be "bettered", they will do thinking for everyone.

Cindy has not been left behind, she is about to lap you.

The union thugs and ebt crowd -  low information voters - got her elected.

Didn't even care that she lied and claimed to be a minorty to get advancement.

Didn't care that she sucks down 350K a year for teach a class, and claims to be a "for the middle class".

Didn't care that she worked for an Insurance company to deny benefits to cancer victims....

Marx and Engel selling the Globe?  Say it isn't so ...

But wait, Rupert Murdoch you say?  Be still my heart.

Massive severance payments to follow.

Finally, some good news.

Thank the lord that the globe helped "Liz" Warren, Deval, and Obama get elected before the roof fell in. THANX FOR RUINING OUR FUTURE! Time to settle up now.

After that fiasco in Britain I don't think they let Murdoch buy newspapers anymore.

Sorry tinfoil hat wearers but Warren has been as advertised, and you are simply BEGGING that a fake news/conspiracy guy like Murdoch buys the Globe so the real low information/no facts voter (FOX News) will be ascendent.  On a negative note I am so sorry that you hate America so much that you are willing to detroy it in order to save it.  Cheers!

Replies

to lord chaucer:  have you ever heard of "creative destruction"?

Yeah, "Aperture", back in the 'Nam days, they said "We had to destroy the town in order to save it."  That didn't fly then, and it doesn't now.  So, I guess it's "Onward, Sequestration!"

Rupert Murdoch? PLEEEEEEASE!! NOT THAT!!!

Those of you who think the hard copy of the Boston Globe will last forever are misguided.. The world is digital..the Globe would do better to recognize that reality, and go to a digital only format.. The savings on paper, ink and delivery would be immediate, and could be put back into the digital model which would cost far less to produce.. The future is here...one need only look to New Orleans, Cleveland and Denver, where the hard copy is being cut back to three days a week, or in Denver's case, none at all..

Replies

How about the "non at all" option for the globe.........

"Aperture" -- You're free to stop reading and, especially, subscribing at any time.  But you just can't stop, can you?

Kevin, You tend to be more down the middle than most. But do you actually read the paper? Your comment that ask Dimasi and Tierney if we go easy on Democrats, are you kidding? Before the latest go round, who did the Globe endorse for Congress, wasn't it Tierney, in spite of his wife going to jai? Let's see, let's start with the tough journalistic piece on Deval Patrick, his Safety Secretary with the 9 accidents. When asked who hired her did. Didn't know anything about it or how, his response was personel. Who in personel? Don't know. What happened wit Tim Murry, we are not going to give you the phone logs and the investigation was swept under the rug. The issue with the criminal lab? Not hs fault, only the people who he put in charge, it is their fault, not his? The pharmacy mess, not his fault, someone elses. The lab scandal going to costs the state close to a half a BILLION dollars, but he is a visionary wanting us to pay more taxes. Why did Marsha Coakley go after Tim Cahill while Willie Lantigua can waste tax money, fail to file campaign reports as required by law, and no criticism for her of for him!!! u Kevin, you are too good for that comment. You have the Op Ed writers say that any cardinal involved with the sex scandal shouldn't vote for a new pope, yet yo had a senator who lied and covered p the death of an innocent woman, a congressman who didn't know you had to pay taxes on income you paid to a male escort to be on your staff, but he is the most brilliant person in congress who saved us from the financial mess!!! As a Globe Subscriber for 24 years, to say the paper hasn't gone WAAAAAAAAy left is to deny reality!! Jeff Jacoby made the best coment. It isn't the stories you write that show your bias, it is also the ones YOU DON'T write. Deval, Coakley, De Leo, Murry, both of them, get passes all the time. Nothing to see here folks move along. Of course, anything bad, it is Geroge Bush's fault, the Tea Party and Republicans, right Kevin!!!

Great post! Nothing more to say. Outstanding!

Did the Globe go easy on the Catholic Church while the Herald stood idle?

To Lordchaucer......suggest you do some research on why Fox News dominates ratings? Talk to some Media Buyers and they will tell you that unlike CNN or MSNBC, Fox has a broader appeal across a wide spectrum of viewers. Chris Matthews may send a tingle down your leg, but advertisers can sell enough of Chris to dominate. Nothing to do with the wing nuts on the right!

Replies

Fox's ratings are down, but they will stay on top because their message is clear with no nuance at all.  Matthews will give Obama grief when it's warranted - did you watch during that whole Catholic church/birth control discussion?  Fox creates its own message and finds announcers who will announce simple, distorted but simple, facts that suit their/your ideological message.

Looks like Ernie Boch Jr. is gonna buy it. He's pretty right wing, he's on AAF in the morning some time. Sorry lefties.

The NYTimes bought the Globe in 1998 for $1.1 billion.  The NYTimes total market capitalization today is $1.3 billion.  Pinch Sulzberger is a bleepin' idiot.
