Prosecutors upgrade charges in New Bedford child battery case to murder

Prosecutors have upgraded the charges against Ethan Harrison, a New Bedford man accused of battering an infant, to murder, the Bristol district attorney’s office said.

Harrison, 23, has been held without bail since his Jan. 25 arrest on reckless endangerment and assault of a child charges, following the death of 9-month-old Ariel Eluziario. The charges were upgraded Thursday to murder; Harrison is to be arraigned in New Bedford District Court next Tuesday.

Harrison lived with Eluziario and her mother but was not the girl’s biological father, District Attorney Samuel Sutter’s office said in a statement.

Eluziario was airlifted to Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, R.I., on Jan. 24 after initially being admitted to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford with life-threatening injuries. She died later that night, the statement said.

During an interview with investigators, Harrison “admitted to certain acts that were consistent with the injuries” sustained by Eluziario, the statement said. Investigators believe Harrison was alone with Eluziario at the time of her death.
