US Representative David Cicilline will share a leadership role in the newly reorganized Congressional Portuguese Caucus. The Rhode Island Democrat said Friday he will serve as co-chairman along with Democrat Jim Costa and Republican David Valadao, both of California. The goal of the caucus is to increase awareness of the achievements of the estimated 1 million individuals of Portuguese descent in the nation and strengthen ties with Portugal. Providence during the early part of the 20th century served as a gateway for Portuguese immigration, and Rhode Island continues to have a sizeable Portuguese-American population. (AP)
