John Connolly to run for mayor of Boston

Councilor John R. Connolly will announce Tuesday that he is a candidate for mayor, striving to topple Thomas M. Menino to become Boston’s first new chief executive in a generation.

Connolly, 39, will hold a rally outside a Boston public school with parents to kick off his campaign, he said in an interview Monday. Menino has not indicated publicly whether he will seek a sixth term, but Connolly is preparing to take on the powerful incumbent.

The other Conley, Dan would have a better chance and would be a better choice.

Not a chance.

Time for a change.  Good for him for thinking he can bring it.

Good luck!  It is about time for a new person at the top.  This guy gets that the steady exit of the middle class from Boston has to do mostly with thin factor- the schools, quality and complete lack of predictability?

Now just watch, though, how many city workers pull the knives out.  And a question - why is Dor Joyce answering campaign quetions?

WELL SAID!

Connolly deserves credit for stepping up and bringing real, impactful issues into focus.

I think it's time for Tom to pass the Torch. No matter what his Staff says, he's not as robust as he once was. The very fact that Tom Menino is even considering running, even with the aforementioned issue sounds Imperial. I supported the Mayor, and voted for him. However, there's a whole Generation between Connolly and Menino that is hungry for fresh leadership. Again, you've done great things Tom, pass the Torch!

I completely agree with YankeeGreen.  In my opinion, Connelly may not be the right person to be the next mayor but it needs to be someone besides Menino.  And if Menino loves this city as much as he purports to he should bow out and support the best person for the job because as long as Menino holds on good people will be reluctant to run.

A very smart strategic move on this kids part... come out against the mayor now, if the mayor doesn't run and others come out after the fact to run he'll look like a hero. The only candidate with the balls to run against the sitting mayor! Very smart!!

He's running on the right platform. Menino has done nothing about bussing, never mind the schools. He isn't now, and never has been right for the job.
