Daphne Alce fled political upheaval and an abusive husband in Haiti. Then she ran from a boyfriend who beat her in Canada and tried to make her way to Philadelphia, where she had sent her children to live with a sister. When Alce tried to cross the US border with a fraudulent passport in October, she was caught and arrested.
US prosecutors, hearing her story, dropped the charges. An asylum officer interviewed her and determined she had a credible fear of persecution if she were deported to Haiti. But immigration officials kept her in jail, holding her in Boston and releasing her only last month after the Globe requested an interview.

I am sure if you release these detainees they will show up to their hearings and follow through on their court orders. Just like Obama's uncle.

It is infuriating. But fear not, because after the amnesty bill passes, all immigrants will be legal. It will be very easy for anyone to enter illegally, and apply for the transitional work status that is being granted to the 11 million already here. Thank God, since all immigrants will be effectively "legal", there will not be any more illegall immigrants.
There is no 'amnesty bill' and only people brought here when they were young children are eligible for transitional work status. But hey, don't let the facts get in the way of your propaganda.

Detain and Deport all ILLEGAL ALIEN CRIMINALS (and they are all criminals!)
There are at least a billion people around the world with sad and even tragic stories to tell. My heart goes out to them. But the U.S. cannot allow them to stay if they enter the country illegally. If we tolerate illegal immigration, we are (1) behaving unfairly towards those who immigrate legally, and (2) encourage immigrants to bypass the immigration & naturalization process. Reform the immigration laws; don't ignore them.

You miss my point, Kitch. Illegals are also human beings who deserve our empathy. However, empathy does not mean that they should be allowed to enter the country illegally.
Should have just dropped her off at the welfare office rather than the train station...was it cheaper to detain her or pay for the refugee welfare, free apartment, food stamps, etc that she now qualifies her for after her asylum interview? Never mind get out of jail free card, it is really a free American dream card...after she takes a bus to her 2 kids.

And, not for nothing... but abusive husband in haiti, abusive boyfriend in Canada...
Perhaps she should associate with a different class of folks.
Why not release them back to their country of origin. If they enter illegally, they should be deported end of story.

The article would have been considerably improved if it had mentioned that Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson and similar officials view immigrant detention as an important source of funds. If ICE was more careful about who actually needs to be detained and who can monitored more cheaply, the Bristol County Jail would get less revenue. The taxpayers would save money, but Hodgson obviously isn't concerned about that.

Like any other group of people there are good and bad illegal immigrants. I live in Southern California and have a small business here. This is a complex issue which I certainly do not have all the answers. But the situation is clearly out of control. This is not about one person from Haiti but about millions and millions of illegals who do not pay taxes but do drain the resources of society in many ways from free food, free medical care, free schools, etc. The cost for all this is passed on to those who do pay in much higher taxes and insurance and makes it very very difficult for a small business to follow the rules and survive.

she entered illegally....end of story....no job, housing and will be on welfare with her two children just like Aunt Zetuni...and never paid a dime into our society....great...and our elderly and legal residents will have their aid cut, just so Pres. Obama can make a point. Try going into other countries like she has and see if they would keep and support her.
