Menino defends decision to open schools during storm

Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino today defended the decision to open schools in Boston, saying officials received conflicting forecasts before the snowstorm ended up dumping more than a foot of snow on the city.

“We got conflicting forecasts during the night and morning about how much snow and when it was going to happen,” Menino said. “Calling the schools off on 5 or 6 in the morning doesn’t work. It doesn’t work for our schools and it doesn’t work for working parents. What are they are going to do about day care?”

Supt Johnson reason for having school despite all the calls for not driving is another example of what a BAD CHOICE she was

So it's all about about parental inconvenience and day care?  It's all about SAFETY Mr. Mayor.

You could have looked out the window this mornng Mr. Mayor and, rather than blaimng the conflicting forcasts, made a decision yourself.

Common sense, that is all people are asking for Mayor Menino.  I went to school today because I live closer than many of my colleagues.  I didn’t want “the children” who came to the building, because they didn’t want to lose “perfect attendance,” left unsupervised!  My usual 20-minute commute, took me 2 hours!  The sidewalks to my school were unplowed.  Children were walking in the street.  I was afraid of my car sliding into them!  Many of my colleagues attempted to come in, but called in-route to say they had to turn around and go home!  It was just too dangerous to continue driving!

“constructively present’’  Even when I was in attendance in high school I could have been marked down as “constructively present.’’

Please, I usually don't support Mumbles Menino but on this one he is right.  If we are too weak to make it to school or work when there is about a foot of snow, this nation is in serious trouble.  This is not that unusual of an event.

Marking students constructively present is troublesome -- I wonder if there is an angle to get state or federal funding for today based on that.

While we were all complaining about our kids going to school today, their peers in China logged 12 hours of hard core studies.  Get to work, get to school, stop crying.

School buses clogging this mornings roads, we counted 6 broken down buses this morning. That's safety? Bad enough half the streets were not plowed, then Morrissey Blvd closed down.  Thank you Mayor great move. For once in your life admit you made a mistake.

When Boston allows school to be open during storms, Everett follows.  Because of the nutjob higher-ups, kids in Everett, with no bus system mind you, had to trudge through the foot of snow.   Insane Mr. Mayor!
