Storm ravages homes on Plum Island

NEWBURY — A swollen ocean, roiled by the winds from a strong storm off the coast during high tide this morning, has placed a dozen houses in jeopardy on vulnerable Plum Island, including one that was knocked off its foundation and teetering over the beach, the Newbury building inspector said today.

“This is absolutely the worst damage I’ve seen [in my eight years as building inspector]. We weren’t expecting this, especially because last night’s high tide was so mild,” said Sam Joslin, the building inspector.

Actually, it's not " afailure of action on behalf of the federal and state government,” Mr. Connors.  Why should taxpayers' dollars be spent to protect private homes of people foolish enough to live in the middle of harm's way?

I agree. These are the same people that won't let you swim in front of their house in the summer.  They want it all. The sea is taking the land back.  No hope for that area and taxpayers should NOT be asked to pay for seawalls and sand etc.  It's a hopeless cause.

Actually, you are both wrong.  The "red tape and failure of action on behalf of the federal and state government" has nothing to do with tax payer money.  No one is asking for tax payers money.  All of the actions to protcet these homes are paid for soley by the home owners.  All they are asking is for PERMISSION to take action, which is constantly and repeatedly denied by local and state goverment.  That is the failure on behalf of the federal and state governement that Mr. Conners is speaking of.   And don't forget when all these home owners purchased their homes there was over 100 feet of dune in front of their homes.

Before you judge peoiple you should know the facts.

Yes...one hundred feet of dune....and before that...probably 150 feet of dune.  Keeps shrinking and shrinking and shrinking.  Then it will expand again, and then shrink and shrink and shrink.  They live in an area where the ocean usually does and should win and things always are changing.

Quite possibly the owner has government subsized insurance to boot, which is the most ridiculous thing ever.
