A taxing time for many at UMass

Alexis Marvel is, in many ways, a typical UMass Boston student: hard-working, busy, and saddled with ever-increasing debt, largely due to mounting tuition and fees.

In just two years, the 23-year-old political science major has racked up $20,000 in student debt. So she will be following the state government’s budget debate on UMass with intense personal interest.

I would much rather have my tax dollars going to UMass then to building a 1.4 Billion dollar train to New Bedford.

Think what a great luniversity we could have if we spent 1.4 Billion dollars on it.

“The reality is that it’s the will of the faculty and the students and the parents,”

What about the "will of the taxpayer"?  I don't want to have money taken from me and given to hack teachers and layabout students.

Honestly.

I don't think so. This lady will go places. But you're very clever, in a mean, adolescent sort of way.

Sociology degree from UMass = "You want fries with that?"

Nothing in life is free, good for you for working hard and taking the initiative to better yourselves. UMASS is trying to look like Harvard, there is no need for fancy buildings and landscaped campuses. That is where you will save the tuitions from going up.

maybe the umass president can lower his salary, and the other deans and admin and coaches to reasonable levels, and not be paid multi million dollars per year from us taxpayers? why do they make more than the us president?? why does the football and basketball coaches make so much money like they are in the nfl or nba? as for tax revenue, how much are the state govt legislatures stealing from us to build a bogus ted kennedy center? who wants that? why? where was the vote on it? disgusting

Listen up, People - sjwu81 says it. I am an alum of UMass and have never given them a dime although they call me constantly begging for a donation. They waste countless dollars on executive salaries. Don't believe me? Check up Bill Bulger's pension - just one 'small' example. Oh and for what it is worth, I worked and went to school simlutaneously without any gap - no world tour for me!! I've been working non-stop since I was 13.

From public records, Robert Caret was paid $503,881.18 in 2012, not including benefits. That pretty much sums up why UMASS tuitions are so high.

You've got it!

Ok. IF subsidizing UMass is sooooo important, here's a simple suggestion to the politicians that feel that way:

FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO CUT, in place of that increase. If its that important, That shouldnt be a problem/issue.

IF you cant find something else to cut in the budget, to be able to make up that extra subsidy, its not worth it.

NO NEW TAXES.....

Why should taxpayers or the government be resposible for paying for higher education for anyone?  We all get the first 12 or 13 years for free.  Shouldn't we be on our own after that?  Public colleges and universities are already lower for state residents than private institutions, thanks to the taxpayer.

Funny that 2 years into UMass this girl has $20k in debt and no one feels bad (not saying they should), but a couple of days ago, the article with the kid getting $57,500 per year in sholarship money had people crying a river that he had to come up with $2500 a year to pay for BC...and people were shocked that the school suggested he get a job...

how much does it cost to go to Umass?  How does one write a column about this subject withputt including that basic information?

All in about $23,500 a year (in-state rate, tuition and fees and room and board, not including books) before financial aid, which I assume the 23-year-old performance artist whose father is "out of the picture" would qualify for.
