Tree service workers have cut down a 108-year-old elm outside the historic John Brown House in Providence after it was found to have a deadly fungal infection. Workers with Mike’s Tree Service cut the tree into sections Monday that will be used to make commemorative pieces celebrating the old elm. The Rhode Island Historical Society said the tree had to be removed to prevent the canker disease from spreading to other trees. Members of the Historical Society will be working with experts at the Rhode Island School of Design and others to create furniture and other objects from the tree parts.
