R.I. high school teacher accused of assaulting teen

A Middletown High School teacher has been charged with assaulting a 17-year-old girl and has been placed on paid leave as police look into his relationship with the student. The Newport Daily News reported that Patrick Aylward, 39, recently was charged by Portsmouth police with assaulting the girl Feb. 16 outside a motel. Police said he head-butted her after he had rented a room for them. Aylward is a physical education and health teacher at the high school, and the girl is a junior there. Police said that Aylward also assaulted her in previous incidents and that officers are investigating their relationship.
