"Casper became the first black woman on the federal bench in Boston by taking the seat vacated by the death of a great black judge named Reginald Lindsay. Believe me when I tell you that Reggie Lindsay was a good judge and a better man." A better man than whom?
"Jay Carney, Whitey’s lawyer, moved heaven and earth to get rid of Rick Stearns, the judge and former prosecutor who was supposed to preside over Whitey’s trial."
"Stearns is a good guy, but the Appeals Court was right to remove him. The appearance of a conflict was pretty obvious."
[Rick is it? A good guy? Do Mr. Cullen and Rick share brewskies and play foosball together?]
So, what's with the hyperbolic description of Mr. Carney's efforts to remove Judge "Rick" when Mr. Cullen agrees that he had a conflict in presiding over the trial? And, guess what? he didn't move heaven and earth. He filed a motion and pointed out the "pretty obvious" conflict.
I understand that Mr. Cullen is not a reporter (read: disinterested, dispassionate, fact driven). He is a social commentator. Yet, his prejudices are untethered. Persuade your readers of your position, Mr. Cullen. This is print journalism; not talk radio.
Oh, and as to your final question, "Now what's Jay Carney to do?" The better question is, "What's the U.S. Attorney's office to do?"
I think the plain English of the sentence is pretty clear: he was a good judge and an even a better man (than he was a judge) -- he does not compare him to another person. Beyond that, your comments seem to be nothing but hot air and spinning to find a worthy gripe. I suggest you relax and switch to Sanka.
For someone who purports to be smart, QA, you should learn to diagram a sentence. "Reggie Lindsay was a good judge and a better man," means he was "A good judge and a better man than he was a judge."
As for your criticism of Cullen's reporting abilities, I think the facts of his professional career speak for themselves.
I predict that Whitey's next move will be to fire Carney and atempt to further delay this trial. If that fails he will ask to be bussed to a different court!
