FBI says it knows identity of Gardner art thieves

Names not divulged; trail of Gardner masterworks ended with a sale try a decade ago; investigators cite progress, seek help in cracking 1990 case

Federal investigators, in an unprecedented display of confidence that the most infamous art theft in history will soon be solved, said Monday that they know who is behind the Gardner Museum heist 23 years ago and that some of the priceless artwork was offered for sale on Philadelphia’s black market as recently as a decade ago.

In the most extensive account to date of the investigation, Richard DesLauriers, the FBI special agent in charge of the Boston office, would not identify those involved in the heist, saying it would hinder the ongoing investigation. But he said that knowing the identity of the culprits has “been opening other doors” as federal agents continue their search for the missing artwork.

What happens if the artwork ( evidence ) is destroyed?

I don't think so. These art crooks are after all gentlemen too. They appreciate art and would never destroy valuable art. Down deep there is a certain quality of goodness and kindness in them, though they are still thieving bastards.

wOW!!!

This theft was George Bush's fault.

You're a Gman. You're trying to justify to the Gmen bean counter that something's really, trully happening this time. And you get to travel around the world on the govt tab. Even the Globe (what a surprise) is taken in.

Whitey talked. Coincidence they caught him and now they figured out this mystery?  I don't think so.  Smells like they got some help.  Watch Jimmy Hoffa all of sudden turn up.

And I know who killed Jimmy Hoffa, but I'm not telling where the body is.

I don't think Whitey had anything to do with it. But I do think that one of those guys in prision is negotiating a way out. Man, 54 years old and you're in until 2044? I'd blab...

Someone ( a comment-er) over at the Herald says the stolen art work is in a FBI agent's man cave!  I believe it, after hearing about their shenanigans/incompetencies during the Connelly era (this theft did take place during his watch, correct?)

The fix was probably in. Someone connected given time for the statute of limitations to kick in so no jail time.

I think I saw one of the paintings on the wall of my local pizza joint!

its sad that ordinary civilins can't believe anything the FBI says anymore, especially anyone victemized by organized crime around here recently, or any civil rights activists in the deep south. 40 years ago. Read Sundays NYT front page, not inl
