Providence authorities said crime was down 4 percent overall in 2012, though the level of violent crime remained the same. The city said Thursday that violent crime remained static, with 1,230 violent crimes recorded in 2012, compared to 1,225 in 2011. But the number of homicides climbed to 17 from 12, a 42 percent increase. Officials said robberies were down 10 percent, burglaries dropped 16 percent, and property crimes fell 5 percent. Authorities said they are pushing hard to get illegal guns off the streets. Last year, 130 firearms were seized. Twenty-five have been seized this year to date.
