A 26-year-old man was fatally shot in Jamaica Plain Sunday evening, according to Boston Police spokeswoman Katherine Shea.
Shea said police got a call just before 8:30 p.m. Sunday for a person shot behind 104 Minden St. in Jamaica Plain. The victim was taken by ambulance to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, Shea said.
Shea did not have a description of the suspect or suspects. No other details were immediately available.
Police used caution tape to block off Miden Street between Schiller and Gay Head streets as neighbors ventured out of their homes to see what had happened.
A nearby neighbor, speaking to a reporter though a window, said she was watching TV in her living room when she heard two gunshots.
She said she saw about six people, who she believes are relatives of the victim, standing in the backyard of the two-and-a-half story, two-family home at 104 Minden as EMTs tended to the victim.
The woman in the window, who declined to give her name, said the victim was bleeding and it looked as though he had been shot in the chest.
The property where the shooting occurred is part of a 43-unit affordable housing complex owned and managed by the Hyde Square Cooperative, city records show.
There was another shooting in Boston earlier Sunday, police said.
At about 2:15 p.m., shots were fired near the intersection of Zeigler and Dearborn streets in Roxbury, Shea said. Despite calls to police saying someone had been shot, officers did not find anyone with injuries.
But, a couple of blocks away, officers saw Jaylin Hawkins, 18, of Roxbury, who matched a description of the shooter, Shea said. When officers tried to talk to him, he took off through a crowd of people leaving Easter service at a church at Vine and Dudley streets.
Officers found a gun in his waistband and arrested him on charges of gun possession, assault by a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.Matt Rocheleau can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org. Jaclyn Reiss can be reached at email@example.com.
