State Police said a depressed Newport teenager who tried to jump off the Pell Bridge was pulled to safety by a quick-acting trooper and two motorists. State Police said they were called to the bridge shortly before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday on reports of a man walking with his bicycle. Authorities said Trooper Andrew Carter responded and stopped his cruiser in front of the man, who dropped his bike and tried to jump over the bridge railing. Carter and two motorists pulled the man back over the railing after a brief struggle with him. The teenager told police he was depressed. He was treated at Newport Hospital.
