The season for trout and landlocked salmon opened Saturday in Vermont, and the Department of Fish and Wildlife plans to start stocking almost 265,000 trout and salmon across the state in May. In addition, 14,500 two-year-old ‘‘trophy’’ trout will be stocked in 16 miles of streams and 14 lakes and ponds to give anglers the opportunity to catch big fish. Lake Champlain will also be stocked with almost 500,000 landlocked salmon and different species of trout of varying sizes.
