Candlelight vigil planned for Watertown’s Victory Field

A candlelight vigil for victims of Monday’s Boston Marathon bombings and the suspected bombers’ Thursday night shootings will be held in Watertown tonight, according to multiple postings on Twitter.

The vigil will begin at 7 p.m. at Victory Field, on Orchard Street between Watertown High School and J.R. Lowell Elementary School, according to the postings.

Watertown was among several local communities deeply affected by the past week’s violence, believed to be caused by brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. The brothers are ethnic Chechens who immigrated a decade ago from Dagestan, an autonomous, predominantly Muslim region of Russia, and settled in Cambridge.

After allegedly shooting and killing an MIT police officer and carjacking a motorist in Cambridge Thursday night, the brothers fled police pursuers into Watertown, exchanging gunfire and throwing explosives at police, authorities said. Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in the gun battle, police said.

Police locked down 20 blocks of Watertown, and area residents were told to stay inside their homes all day Friday, as officers conducted a house-to-house search for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

On Friday night, police located and arrested the suspect, who had been hiding in a covered boat in a Franklin Street backyard.
