Lottery winner becomes a ‘surprise’ millionaire

PROVIDENCE — A retired bus driver from Central Falls thought he had struck it rich with a lottery ticket worth $250,000. But it turns out Rhode Island’s smallest, poorest city has a new millionaire in Dennis J. Edwards Jr.

State lottery officials said Edwards had quite a shock when he showed up at lottery headquarters in Cranston on Friday with a Mega Millions ticket for the April 16 drawing that had matched five numbers. The standard payout is a quarter-million dollars.
