Boston mayoral race

24 vying for Boston mayor

The last major candidate expected to join the race for Boston mayor applied for nomination papers — the first step in a mayoral bid — Friday at City Hall, bringing the number of potential candidates to 24. Campaigns can continue applying for nomination papers until May 13. To secure a spot on the ballot, candidates must gather the signatures of 3,000 registered voters by May 21. Mayor Thomas M. Menino’s announcement that he would not seek a sixth term unleashed a torrent of political ambition that had been pent up for a generation.
