Gomez raps Markey for ‘talking about everything but the economy’

Republican Senate hopeful Gabriel E. Gomez appeared on FOX News Channel Monday and knocked his Democratic opponent, US Representative Edward J. Markey, for not focusing his campaign on economic issues.

“My opponent is effectively talking about everything but the economy and running a negative campaign,” Gomez told host Neil Cavuto. “He’s literally talking about anything he can talk about that’s not the economy.”

Gomez, a private equity investor and former Navy SEAL, contrasted his private sector experience with Markey’s, who was elected to Congress in 1976.

In the FOX News appearance, Gomez also said he would be open to curbing military spending, as long as it didn’t cut funding for the troops or their training. “All parts of the government have room to trim,” he said. “Even being a military guy for nine years, I still think the Department of Defense has areas you can trim.”

As for the charge of negativity, by the standards of modern Senate campaigns, neither Markey nor Gomez’s campaign has gone particularly negative. In the week since each won his party’s nomination, Gomez has emphasized his biography, while Markey has focused on pushing Gomez to sign a pledge that would limit outside spending in their race.

Gomez will face off with Markey in the June 25 special election to fill the seat formerly held by John F. Kerry, now secretary of state.
