One more gem of a day, then showers ahead

Enjoy today while you can, because rain showers are rolling in Wednesday and sticking around through the weekend.

Today will be the all-around nicest day of the week with sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-70s expected today, the National Weather Service says.

A bright morning will transition into a brilliant afternoon as clouds stay away from the metro area and highs climb to 74 degrees in Boston, National Weather Service meteorologist Alan Dunham said. A light wind off the ocean will pick up in the afternoon, slightly cooling temperatures along Cape Cod and the islands, Dunham said.

Clouds will make their way into the region overnight. Forecasters expect highs in the upper 60s and afternoon showers Wednesday. Those soaking showers will likely continue overnight with a rumble of thunder possible, too, Dunham said.

Thursday will be much of the same, featuring showers, possible thunderstorms, and highs in the 60s.

Skies will somewhat clear Thursday night. Friday will feature mostly cloudy skies, a slight chance of showers, and a high of 70 in Boston.

The weekend will be similar to the end of the week, with spotty showers possible throughout Saturday and Sunday.

“It’s not the sunny weekend we had last weekend, but it’s not bad. It won’t rain the whole weekend,” Dunham said.
