MEMORIAL DAY 2013

The Mass. service members killed in Afghanistan

Service and sacrifice

From the peaks of the Hindu Kush to mud-brick villages in treeless valleys, Afghanistan has remained an unwelcoming place of veiled and sudden danger since America’s longest war began in October 2001.

A lightning rout of the ruling Taliban by US-led forces after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks failed to be the final word. Since the first American airstrikes, 2,227 US service members have died in this ancient Asian crossroads, including 45 from Massachusetts.

The memorial roll extends from Army Sergeant First Class Daniel Petithory, 32, of Cheshire, killed by friendly fire Dec. 5, 2001, to Army Specialist Mitchell Daehling, 24, of Dalton, the victim of a roadside bomb May 14.

With most US troops not scheduled to be withdrawn until December 2014, the list could grow longer.

But on this holiday, in a country weary of war, the sacrifice made by these 45 service members and their families is worth remembering. Lasting peace in Afghanistan might be elusive at best, or unattainable at worst, but for the service members, their focus was more immediate.

They volunteered to serve their country, fully aware of the price they might pay. And for that, in an ageless remembrance of fallen warriors, they are honored today. — BRIAN MACQUARRIE
