A Rhode Island state trooper working a construction detail on Interstate 295 in Smithfield was injured when his cruiser was struck by another vehicle. State Police said the cruiser was parked with its overhead emergency lights on at around 1:45 a.m. Tuesday near Route 7 when a car driven by Amber Martufi, 23, crashed into it. The trooper was initially knocked unconscious and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital. Colonel Steven O’Donnell said he is recovering. State Police said Martufi appeared to be intoxicated and failed a field sobriety test. She was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and driving to endanger.
