First Night organizer closing

First Night Boston, creator of the city’s signature New Year’s celebration, is ceasing operations after nearly four decades because of declining donations and sponsorships. The nonprofit group is laying off its small staff and closing its downtown offices by month’s end.

“We just can’t support it anymore,” Geri Guardino, First Night’s director, said Thursday. “It’s very sad.”
