A heat advisory remains in effect today for Eastern Massachusetts, with temperatures reaching 90 degrees in Boston at around 9:30 a.m., officially marking the second heat wave of the season, according to the National Weather Service.

Today’s high temperature could crest at 96 degrees, or two degrees higher than the weather that made this year’s Fourth of July so memorable. The all-time high for today is 101 degrees, a record set in 1919.

While the thermometer is not expected to reach 100 today, humid conditions will make it feel like 100 degrees in much of the state today, the weather service said. The forecasters recommended minimizing outside activity during the hottest part of the day, staying out of the sun, staying in an air-conditioned place, and drinking plenty of water.

Dry weather should prevail today, but scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible, especially north of Route 2.

“The atmosphere is very wet, there is a lot of moisture in the air,” said meteorologist Bill Simpson. “This allows for more instability and so if it does rain, it can rain real hard for a short period of time.”

Temperatures will easily exceed 90 degrees this weekend, continuing the heat wave with highs in the mid-90s, according to the weather service. And humidity levels won’t dissipate much over the weekend, although Sunday could see slightly diminished temperatures and dewpoints.

But early next week will see some cooling as temperatures drop into the mid-80s, officially ending the heat wave and offering some relief to the state, according to the weather service.

“It’s definitely going to be more comfortable next week,” Simpson said.
