Colm O'Molloy for The Boston Globe
Alejandro Escovedo was one of the musical acts to perform on the Boston Common at the opening day of the Outside the Box festival.
With a dense cloud cover shielding them from the summer sun, the crowd kept growing.
Performers from Australia's Strange Fruit were part of the festivities.
Outside the Box -- a kaleidoscope of music, theater, dance, and other entertainment -- runs for nine days and across the Common and City Hall plaza.
Los Lonely Boys (pictured) and Los Lobos were major draws on Saturday.
Ted Bach of Somerville brought his family out after he saw a Facebook post from a friend with details about the festival.
