SOMERVILLE — Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone said he continues to mull a bid for governor in 2014, but he has no firm timetable for when he will make a decision.
“I’m inspired that I get so much encouragement to consider it, which I am,” the Democrat told reporters after an event with Governor Deval Patrick welcoming a new business to the city.
“The opportunity to do the innovative work that’s been lauded nationally, internationally here in Somerville at a statewide level is intriguing to me and I’ll come to some conclusion in the near future,” said Curtatone, who is serving his 10th year as mayor.
Curtatone, 47, said he would consider what was right for his family before making a decision on whether to run. But, he added, which Democrats end up running for the Corner Office could influence his choice, too.
“I’m going to make my decisions based on my own personal analysis,” he said. “But to say that you ignore the field would not be truthful. You need to calculate that in your thinking.”
State Attorney General Martha Coakley and US Representative Michael E. Capuano, both Democrats, have said they are also considering running for governor.
Asked whether he was waiting to see whether Capuano — a Somerville resident and former mayor of the city — would run before he made a decision, Curtatone did not directly answer the question.
“I have not spoken to Mike Capuano about his consideration for governor nor has he spoken to me about mine,” Curtatone said. “We’re close colleagues and friends. My decision is based solely — on many things — but most importantly, on the impacts on my family and where I am, professionally, in my life.”
Treasurer Steven Grossman, state Senator Daniel A. Wolf, former Obama administration official Donald M. Berwick, and biotechnology executive Joseph Avellone are all running for the Democratic nomination.
Republican Charles D. Baker, who was the GOP nominee for governor in 2010, is also seen as likely to run again.
Patrick, elected for a second time in 2010, has said he will not run for a third term.Joshua Miller can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org. Follow him on Twitter @jm_bos.
