Quincy man charged with attempted kidnapping

A Quincy man has been charged with attempting to kidnap a 20-year-old woman who was waiting for a bus near a public library on Washington Street.

Mark Levin, 50, of Quincy allegedly tried to order the woman into his car on July 18. He was arrested Monday and arraigned Tuesday in Quincy District Court, where he was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing Friday.

Levin faces a charge of attempted kidnapping, a worker in the Quincy District Court clerk’s office said.

The young women told police that Levin had approached her in a green Toyota Corolla around 7:30 p.m., Quincy Police Captain John Dougan said. The woman was waiting for a bus near the Thomas Crane Public Library, when Levin drove by three times.

Levin then allegedly told her “get in my car.” The women responded, “Get away from me,” and said she would call the police. Levin then left.

The 20-year-old women reported the incident Monday to police, providing the license plate number for Levin’s 1997 Corolla to officers.

Levin admitted he had attempted to coerce women into his car numerous times before, in both Quincy and Brookline, Dougan said. Dougan said similar incidents were reported in Quincy in February and May of this year, but no charges were filed.

Levin told officers he was an independently licensed cab driver, and was only trying to be nice when offering women rides.
