A perfect spot to honor victim of bombings

Co-workers said Krystle M. Campbell loved spending time on Spectacle Island, where she savored the sweeping vistas and cool sea breezes while organizing clambakes, weddings, and other events for Jasper White’s Summer Shack restaurant.

Campbell, who was killed in the Boston Marathon bombings, will be remembered on the 105-acre Harbor Island jewel with the dedication of a gazebo there in her name. Members of the Boston Parks and Recreation Commission voted unanimously Monday morning to approve the honor.

“It’s one of the spots on the island she appreciated,” said Jeff Dugan, operations manager and a cofounder of Summer Shack who attended Monday’s hearing to support the dedication.

Campbell even recommended the spot, located between two drumlins, as a wedding site for two close friends, Dugan said.

“The location is just so peaceful,” he said. “You have views of the city and the harbor, and it can be unbelievably quiet.”

Dugan called Campbell, a Medford native who was 29 years old, “an unbelievable role model who brought so many different people together. She was the ‘go to’ person for anyone you spoke to on the island.”

Also submitting a letter of support for Campbell were Philip Griffiths, president of the Boston Harbor Island Alliance; Jack Murray, commissioner of the state Department of Conservation and Recreation: and Kelly Fellner, superintendent of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area.

“We came to know her very well,” read the letter, according to the Boston Parks and Recreation Department. “She loved being on the Islands, and it seems highly appropriate to honor her memory there.”

Advocates for the dedication will now work with city officials to design a plaque for the spot.

“The bombing changed a lot of lives, but if you sit at that spot, you can see everything and it’s just so tranquil and calm,” Dugan said.
