Randolph man accused of punching speeding driver

A 30-year-old Randolph man, angry about a driver reportedly speeding down his street, allegedly followed the man to a gas station Tuesday and punched him twice in the face, breaking his jaw, police said.

At about 11:29 a.m., police received a call that a man, later identified as Phillip Vasialka, had followed the 25-year-old driver to the station and allegedly attacked him.

“Words were exchanged in the gas station,” said Lieutenant John Hamelburg of Randolph police.

“The suspect then punched the victim twice in the face, causing a serious jaw injury,” Hamelburg said.

The victim was allegedly speeding down Cross Street in Randolph where Vasialka lives. Vasialka became angry, got into his car, and followed the victim to the nearby gas station, where the altercation occurred, police said.

The victim remains in the hospital and was to have surgery Wednesday, police said.

Vasialka pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Quincy District Court to a charge of aggravated assault and battery, the Norfolk district attorney’s office said.

Bail was set at $10,000, and Vasialka was ordered to stay away from the victim and his family and not to operate a vehicle without a valid license.

A pretrial hearing for Vasialka is scheduled Aug. 30 in Quincy District Court, the district attorney’s office said.
