Charlotte Golar Richie in May. The mayoral candidate’s father died this weekend.

Mayoral candidate Charlotte Golar Richie lost her father, a New York City political figure, on Sunday, her campaign said.

Simeon Golar, a former justice on the New York State Supreme Court, died of natural causes at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, with his two daughters by his side, the campaign said. He was 84.

Born in 1928 in segregated South Carolina, Golar moved to New York City as a boy, then up through the ladder of Gotham politics. He ran unsuccessfully for state attorney general in 1966 on the Liberal Party ticket, and later became chairman of the city’s Commission on Human Rights and then chairman of the New York City Housing Authority during a turbulent time in the city’s public housing.

Later, he was elected to the state’s high court.

Golar and Richie’s mother, Pauline, had two daughters, Charlotte and Katherine. The parents divorced in 1965, but remained close, Richie’s campaign said.

The campaign said funeral services would be held this week in New York.
