Representative John Tierney (right) will be joined by Nancy Pelosi in Beverly on Friday.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi will join US Representative John Tierney Friday at a forum in Beverly about women and the economy.

While the forum is not a campaign event, Pelosi’s appearance with the Salem Democrat is a sign of political support from national Democratic leadership for the congressman, who already faces a primary challenge from two Democrats and is a top Republican target in his 2014 reelection campaign.

Also, Tierney learned last month that the US House Ethics Committee is considering opening an investigation involving him.

Pelosi, Tierney, and others will take part in a discussion at North Shore Community College titled “When Women Succeed, America Succeeds: an Economic Agenda for Women and Families.”

In a statement, Kirsten Hughes, the chairwoman of the Massachusetts Republican Party, said Pelosi “should suspend her appearance in support of John Tierney” until the potential ethics investigation is completed.

A Pelosi spokeswoman, Evangeline George, said in a statement that Republicans were simply unhappy that Tierney “has been such an effective leader on behalf of his constituents.’’

Democrats Seth Moulton, a former Marine, and Marisa DeFranco, an attorney, are challenging Tierney for the party’s nomination in the North Shore-based Sixth Congressional district.

Republican challenger Richard Tisei, a former Senate minority leader who narrowly lost his 2012 bid to unseat Tierney, has said he is considering a rematch.
