Teen faces charges in deadly crash

An Easton teenager is facing charges in the death of a 71-year-old man and his dog who were struck by a car on Monday morning, police said.

Colin O’Hearne, 17, was served with a criminal complaint, the Bristol district attorney’s office said. O’Hearne faces charges of operating negligently with death resulting, speeding, and a marked lanes violation, said Easton Police Chief Allen Krajcik.

O’Hearne will appear at a clerk magistrate’s hearing in Taunton District Court Sept. 23. The clerk magistrate will decide if probable cause exists and if the charges will be officially issued, Bristol district attorney’s spokesman Gregg Miliote said in a statement.

If probable cause exists, an arraignment will be scheduled for a later date, the statement said.

At around 9:20 a.m. Monday, Easton police responded to calls of a man and dog being struck near 24 Summer St., the statement said.

The victim, George E. Power, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton, where he was pronounced dead at 10:06 a.m., the statement said.

O’Hearne was taken to Brockton Hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, the statement said. He was released Monday, Krajcik said.

An investigation revealed that the 2005 Infiniti driven by O’Hearne struck the victim and his dog on a sidewalk and then struck a tree, the district attorney’s office said.

The incident is under investigation by the district attorney’s office, State Police, and Easton police.

State Police have O’Hearne’s cellphone and are checking whether he was using it around the time of the crash, Krajcik said.
