Vt. Apple donations to food bank sought

As apple season begins, orchard visitors are encouraged to pick or buy apples and donate them to the Vermont Foodbank, remembering those in need. Michelle Wallace, the food bank’s program director, said the Pick for Your Neighbor program helps orchards increase their sales and provides the food bank with fresh, local apples to be distributed. Organizers said last year’s program netted nearly 12,000 apples. Vermont has nearly 4,000 acres of commercial apple orchards, and this year, according to the food bank’s website, about two dozen orchards plan to participate. The program is a joint venture between the food bank, the state’s agriculture agency, and the Vermont Tree Fruit Growers Association. For a list of participating orchards, visit www.vtfoodbank.org.
