Vermont mayor charged with DUI after July crash

Vermont State Police say the mayor of Newport has been cited on a charge of driving under the influence. Police said Paul Monette, 51, was processed for the charge following a July 21 crash on Interstate 91 in Barton, but the results of tests taken at that time were not completed until recently. Monette had minor injuries after the crash. Last week, Monette was issued a citation on a charge of driving under the influence, second offense. Monette is due in court in Newport on Oct. 1. In an e-mail Monday, Monette said that the charge was a personal matter and that he would have no comment.
