Amtrak will resume its high-speed Acela Express trains between New York and Boston Monday morning, though only running half the trains it normally does, according to a company statement released Sunday.
The service had been temporarily suspended due to a New York-area power outage that halted trains from Thursday through the weekend, the statement said.
“We’re glad that we’re able to run what we can, and make sure that folks can get to where they’re going,” Amtrak spokesman Craig Schulz said Sunday.
On Monday, Amtrak will run five Acela trains from Boston to New York and five trains the other way — half of its usual 10 per day. The first New York-bound train will depart from Boston at 6:05 a.m., and the first train heading to Boston from New York will leave at 6:20 a.m., the statement said. The last trains of the day will depart from Boston at 4:15 p.m. and from New York at 7 p.m., Schulz said.
Schulz wanted to assure customers that the company has been monitoring ticket activity so as not to oversell seats during Monday’s limited runs.
“We’ve been proactively managing inventory so we don’t end up in a situation where anyone is stranded,” he said.
There have been tumultuous delays throughout the region after a high-voltage feeder cable failed early Wednesday at a suburban New York station, knocking out power to Metro-North’s New Haven line.
Over the weekend, displaced Acela travelers had been reassigned to take the Northeast Regional Amtrak train, which is relatively slower and temporarily being run on diesel, following the power outage.
“Folks traveling on the weekend should now be getting to where they’re going,” Schulz said Sunday. “We’re just sorting out folks who are booked on Acela trains that are not operating” Monday.
Schulz said passengers on the Northeast Regional trains should not be affected Monday, save for minor delays related to the diesel power.
Amtrak will make further announcements on Monday regarding Tuesday’s service and beyond, Schulz said.
Any passengers who bought Acela tickets but chose not to travel because of the service disruption can receive a refund or travel voucher by visiting amtrak.com.
