Secretary of State Galvin will not run for attorney general

Secretary of State William F. Galvin said Tuesday that he will not run for Massachusetts attorney general, a decision that removes the Democrats’ only major statewide figure from a race to replace Martha Coakley as she pursues a bid for governor.

Galvin said that, after weeks of mulling over the decision, he has decided he wants to continue to push the issues that he has made priorities since he was elected secretary of state in 1994. Those include expanding voter participation among new immigrants; historical preservation, and securities investigations.

“It’s appealing to be the attorney general, but I would rather be building on the progress I have made in my present job,’’ he said.

The departure of Galvin, who was shown to be a popular statewide figure in a recent poll, leaves the race wide open for both hopeful Democrats and could given an opportunity for the GOP to grab an open constitutional office.
