Suspicious object is found in Weymouth

Columbian Square in Weymouth was evacuated for more than an hour Tuesday evening after local authorities discovered what they believed to be a suspicious object, the state fire marshal said. It was not immediately clear what the object was or what sort of threat it posed, but Fire Marshal Stephen Coan said the State Police bomb squad was able to identify and take possession of it without incident. A spokeswoman for South Shore Hospital, which is nearby, said security guards were positioned at the facility’s entrance during the incident, but the hospital did not have to evacuate. Weymouth police are leading the investigation, Coan said.
