State archives database goes online

Rhode Island is making dozens of historical documents available for viewing on the Internet. Secretary of State Ralph Mollis unveiled the new state archives online catalog on Thursday at Rhode Island College. The online collection includes historical documents such as an 1803 letter from Thomas Jefferson to the state’s governor and a photo of Red Sox great Ted Williams posing with a 557-pound tuna he caught off the Rhode Island coast. The online database is intended to make it easier for historians, teachers, students, genealogists, and history buffs to find primary source material. The records date back to 1638. The catalog can be found at the Secretary of State’s website, www.sos.ri.gov .
