City Councilor Bill Linehan has pulled out of a debate with his District 2 challenger Suzanne Lee because he says the organizer has a bias. The forum had been scheduled for Thursday, 6:30-8 p.m. at the Lithuanian Club in South Boston.
Here is a statement from Linehan’s campaign:
“Councilor Linehan is discouraged by the fact that Joanne McDevitt, the event organizer for tomorrow’s forum, has refused to accommodate two simple requests. The first, that a moderator from South Boston be allowed to participate in the forum. Secondly, Councilor Linehan had asked that the forum be held from 6 p.m. - 7:15 pm so that he could honor a prior commitment for the Gavin Foundation’s Annual Awards Dinner.
“McDevitt is a known Lee supporter and has not been able to keep her politics and bias separate from this event. The Linehan campaign will work with other neighborhood association members to reschedule.’’
McDevitt could not immediately be reached for comment.
Lee’s campaign page features a quote from McDevitt. “Suzanne Lee epitomizes the kind of Boston politician I respect: one who stands up for what she believes in and works to bring people together around working for good education and smart development,” it says.
More on this developing story to come.
