Program helps veterans in trouble

A new program called Veterans Justice Outreach is reaching out to help veterans in Vermont and New Hampshire who are facing issues such as jail and homelessness. Deborah Amdur, director of the White River Junction VA Hospital, said the goal is to ensure that veterans who are in the criminal justice system have access to VA mental services and substance abuse treatment. Vermont Public Radio reported that more than 25 states have created special veterans’ treatment courts with alternative sentencing based on the offender’s willingness to seek treatment. Neither Vermont nor New Hampshire has these courts, but the VA hospitals in both states are vowing to work more closely with police and judges to get help to veterans.
