Nativity scene in Medford briefly catches fire

A small Christmas Day fire damaged a Nativity scene outside of Medford City Hall, fire officials said, though they do not suspect foul play. Firefighters arrived about 4:45 p.m. Wednesday and were able to put the fire out within five minutes, Deputy Chief Patrick Ripley said. Some of the plastic statues melted in the 10-foot-by-10-foot display, which was made of wood and surrounded by hay, but there was no damage to City Hall and no injuries, Ripley said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but Ripley said it appears a malfunctioning electric lamp is to blame.
