A Roslindale man suffered injuries not believed to be life-threatening Monday when his pickup truck collided with a tractor-trailer on Route 9 in Newton, trapping him underneath the vehicle until Newton firefighters were able to extricate him from the tangled wreckage, State Police said.
The pickup truck driver was identified by State Police as Jacob Griswold, 24, of Roslindale. “He’s a very lucky man,’’ Assistant Fire Chief Paul Chagnon said of Griswold.
The crash took place around 6:50 a.m. Monday near the Chestnut Hill Mall as Griswold’s 2004 Chevrolet Silverado crashed into the tractor-trailer on Route 9 westbound, State Police said. Route 9 traffic was affected until about 9:30 a.m.
“The pickup had become wedged under the trailer, trapping the operator of the pickup,’’ State Police said.
Griswold could not respond to the first troopers to arrive on the scene, and Newton firefighters were summoned to the crash site to free him, Chagnon said.
Chagnon said firefighters used multiple techniques to stabilize the tractor-trailer, including bringing a tow truck to hold it in place, to remove the driver from the crumpled vehicle. They also used the Jaws of Life and block and tackle equipment during the rescue, he said.
“We had to pull a lot of little tricks out of our bag of tricks,’’ said Chagnon. “It was an involved extrication. We are prepared for that kind of thing.’’
He said that as firefighters prepared to remove Griswold from the wreckage, he told them that he could move all parts of his body, and firefighters took advantage of his mobility. “He actually assisted with his own extrication in that respect,’’ Chagnon said.
He said Griswold was alert and talking with firefighters throughout the process and continued to talk during his ambulance ride to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
The tractor-trailer was operated by Jarrod Morin, a 34-year-old man from Barre who was uninjured, State Police said. State Police said the truck was a 2001 Volvo owned by the The Sygma Network of Columbus, Ohio. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. No charges have been filed.
